Understanding your peak performance charts

Peak Reduction

Cost Savings Calculation

Before the peak occured, the facility was consuming 650 kW

At the time of the Class A peak, the facility was consuming 540 kW

The electricity consumption reduced was 110 kW (650 kW - 540 kW)

Applying the cost per kWh ($100/kWh) provides a cost savings of $11,000

Peak Increase

Cost Increase Example

Before the peak occured, the facility was consuming 760 kW

At the time of the Class A peak, the facility was consuming 1,083 kW

The electricity consumption increase was 323 kW (1,083 kW - 760 kW)

Applying the cost per kWh ($100/kWh) provides a cost increase of $32,300

Peak Neutral

Cost Example

The electricity consumption stayed consistently around 650 kW

Applying the cost per kWh ($100/kWh) provides a Class A cost of $65,000

Peak Reduction with Generator or Battery

Generator/Battery Cost Savings Example

Before the peak occured, the facility was consuming 2,150 kW

At the time of the Class A peak, the facility was consuming 0 kW

The electricity consumption reduced was 2,150 kW

Applying the cost per kWh ($100/kWh) provides a cost savings of $215,000

Note: The above chart shows a prolonged period of the consumption at 0 kW, which is more likely caused by a generator that is run on a constant supply of natural gas, having no strict limits on the runtime.

For a battery solution, you will typically only see energy reduction for a 1-4 hour window, as the battery will eventually run out of stored energy. To ensure the battery always achieves peak energy reduction, they are typically accompanyed by an automated peak tracking software that automatically turns the battery on when there is high certainty a system peak is occuring.
